Many people become freelancers because they know about the advantages of working at home as online freelancer. By being a full time freelancer there are no bosses, flexible time, work at home at home and spending more time with your family. The beauty of being a freelancer and working from home is that it gives you more freedom, and doesn’t require significant investment, all you need is your laptop and you can start working, no traveling to work and no lost time getting to work in the first place.
Being a freelancer sure has its benefits, but also there are many shortcomings associated with freelance lifestyle. The nature of freelance jobs is different from regular 9 to 5 job and if you wish to be making a living working at home as a freelancer you will have to be aware that you will have to pay a price. Here are some things you will have get along with:
- You will not have truly flexible working hours. Being a full time freelancer does not mean that you will have complete control over your time. Your jobs will still have to be finished on time because you will be risking to lose clients.
- Your work and personal life will not be separated. It’s true that all you will need is a computer connected to internet for work and you do not have to commute to a work location, but most of the time you will be working at home and if you have family it’s impossible to avoid these two things from interfering.
- Your social life will suffer. If you work at home as freelancer you will work alone so there are no other people around like there would be if you work a regular 9 to 5 job. As a result of this your social activities will suffer.
- You will have to available at all times. Your clients can be very demanding, so will have to be available for them 24 hours a day. It will not be unheard off to have them calling you at any time of day and demanding answers to their question. Also your vacations will suffer because clients will be contacting you even when you are on vacation. Even if you don’t accept work during vacations expect at least to have to answer emails and phone calls from your clients.
- There are no benefits like those full time employees enjoy. If you work at home don’t expect paid vacation, paid sick days, retirement savings, medical, dental and life insurance and other benefits that come with regular jobs. Of all the disadvantages of freelance career the loss of employee benefits might be the most painful.
Working at home as a freelancer has it’s advantages. But before you decide to leave your job you think carefully are you ready to pay the price necessary to be your own boss. Many people when making a decision usually think about the advantages of making money online as a freelancer and not taking into consideration the shortcomings of that decision
